How to Make an Aromatherapy Vapor Rub

How to Make an Aromatherapy Vapor Rub

For years people have used vapor rubs to soothe congestion from colds and flu, but aromatherapy vapor rubs can help alleviate symptoms from headaches and muscle tension as well. Homemade vapor rubs made with essential oils have the benefit of being more economical and specially tailored to treat different symptoms.

Things You'll Need:

4 tbsp. petroleum jelly, jojoba or sweet almond oil

10 to 15 drops essential oils

Double boiler or sauce pan and ceramic bowl

Spoon

Sterilized, darkly colored containers

1

Melt petroleum jelly in a double boiler on low heat. Place a ceramic bowl in a saucepan so that the water reaches at least halfway up the sides of the bowl if you don't have a double boiler. Skip this step if using jojoba or sweet almond oil.

2

Add 10 to 15 drops of essential oils to melted petroleum jelly or jojoba or sweet almond oil. Use jojoba oil for rubs used on the face since it is non-greasy. Mix thoroughly.

3

Allow the vapor rub mixture to cool slightly if using petroleum jelly. Pour the mixture into your prepared, sterilized jar or container. Make sure your container seals tightly.

4

Store vapor rub in a childproof area. A petroleum jelly rub will solidify as it cools.

5

Rub onto chest and/or throat for relief from chest congestion or onto temples to relieve headaches. Wake yourself up throughout the day by using a vapor rub made with stimulating essential oils such as lemon.

Tips & Warnings

Use vapor rubs at night for best results when treating cold and flu congestion since they help you sleep.

Soothe congestion symptoms with cedar wood, eucalyptus and pine essential oils. Good choices for headaches are
lavender
and peppermint. Lavender, jasmine and ylang ylang soothe insomnia.

Check for skin sensitivity by placing a small amount of the rub on a patch of skin before using.

Lower essential oil concentration for vapor rubs used on
children
. You should use a tenth of the amount of essential oils for children's vapor rubs and avoid peppermint oil.

How to Make an Aromatherapy Compress

How to Make an Aromatherapy Compress

Hot or cold compresses provide relief for aching muscles, headaches and skin irritations. Adding essential oils can improve the effectiveness of a compress and help target specific conditions. Making an aromatherapy compress at home is a quick and easy way to provide soothing relief for your family's aches and pains.

Things You'll Need:

Clean cloth

Water

Essential oils

Plastic wrap

1

Place water in a large bowl. Decide whether to make a hot or cold compress. Hot water increases circulation and a cold compress reduces swelling.

2

Add 6 drops of essential oils for every 2 cups of water you use. Choose oils based on the condition the compress treats. Ginger oil warms stiff muscles, eucalyptus and
lavender
help relieve muscle and headaches and chamomile alleviates pain from rashes, sunburn and cramps.

3

Place the clean cloth in the water. Saturate it with the water and then wring out.

4

Use plastic wrap or a towel to hold the aromatherapy compress in place, especially when using on legs or arms.

5

Re-soak and apply aromatherapy compress multiple times as needed.

Tips & Warnings

Alternate hot and cold compresses for some conditions such as muscle aches.

Use hot water when making up a compress to soothe menstrual cramps.

Check for skin sensitivity or allergies to the essential oils you choose. Some essential oils can irritate sensitive skin.

Store essential oils in areas out of the reach of
children
. Avoid using peppermint oil in compresses for children under 6 years old.

How to Make a Salt Pack

How to Make a Salt Pack

An application of heat can help stiff muscles and joints feel better, or can ease menstrual cramps and stomach aches. Though you can use heating pads, salt is an excellent retainer of heat and its weight can help soothe you further.

Things You'll Need:

2 lbs. kosher or sea salt

Stainless steel pot

Wooden spoon

Cotton pillowcase

Essential oil

1

Heat the salt over medium heat in a pot until it's very hot. Stir with a wooden spoon as you heat so all of the salt is equally heated. It should be fully heated within ten minutes.

2

Pour salt into a cotton pillowcase. Wrap the pillowcase around it so the salt will not spill. You may want to put the first pillowcase inside a second one to make sure the salt stays inside.

3

Immediately apply the salt pack to any area of your body that is stiff, to stomach for menstrual cramps or to any painful joints. Relax and let the weight and heat of the salt pack soothe you.

4

Reheat the salt when it looses its heat. You can use it four to five times, after which it stops retaining heat.

Tips & Warnings

To create aromatherapy benefits with a salt pack, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice into the salt as it is heating or when you add it to the pillowcase. Eucalyptus or ginger oils will help stiff muscles relax.

When the salt can no longer hold heat, add it to bathwater to soften the water or use it as a body scrub.

How to Make a Hot Stone Massage Kit

How to Make a Hot Stone Massage Kit

A hot stone massage is a relaxing luxury that many people indulge in on a regular basis. While you could buy a hot stone massage kit from a company that sells massage supplies, it is easy to make one yourself, and it can be done for half the cost of purchasing one.

1

Visit a rock quarry. The stones sold in massage kits are usually polished stones. While these can look nice and uniform, any river rock works just as well. A rock quarry or landscape firm that sells to the public can show you their selection of river rocks.

2

Select rocks that are flat and fairly smooth. Pick out two large oval stones that are approximately 8 inches long by 6 inches wide. Next, select seven pairs of rocks that you can hold easily in your hand. Finally, choose eight small stones that are between the size of a quarter and the size of an egg.

3

Purchase a warmer, such as a slow cooker or a large tabletop skillet with a lid. You need a 6-quart or larger slow cooker to heat all of the stones at once. If you will be using a tabletop skillet, you need one that has sides at least 3 inches tall.

4

Get the accessories. In addition to the rocks, you need a strainer, slotted spoon or tongs to get the rocks out of the warmer. Also, get a food thermometer and two tea towels.

5

Assemble your hot stone massage kit. Begin by assembling the slow cooker or skillet. Wash the rocks and stack them into your warmer. Fill the warmer with water until the rocks are submerged. Finally, place the kit and the accessories on a sturdy surface by an electrical outlet.

Tips & Warnings

Find rocks that are very close in shape, size and weight to make each pair.

If you are using a smaller warmer, you might not be able to completely cover the rocks.

Use the tea towels between the skin and the stones for people who are sensitive to heat.

The temperature of the rocks and water when heated should not exceed 120 degrees.

The rocks will be hot to the touch and may burn if heated incorrectly.

How to Shop for Quality Shoes on a Budget

How to Shop for Quality Shoes on a Budget

If you're on a tight budget and know you'll need of a new pair of shoes for work or a special occasion, plan ahead. Buy when prices are at their lowest, not necessarily when you need new shoes the most.

Things You'll Need:

Athletic Shoes

Men's Dress Shoes

Men's Running Shoes

Men's Sandals

Women's Closed-toed Shoes

Women's Dress Shoes

Women's Sandals

Step
1

Shop out of season. Look for great deals on sandals in the winter and boots in the summer.

Step
2

Head to thrift stores for deals on secondhand casual shoes. Consider vintage and consignment shops for secondhand dress shoes.

Step
3

Learn about your favorite shoe store or department store's sale cycle. At least twice a year you're apt to find racks and racks of pumps, flats, tennis shoes and active shoes priced to move.

Step
4

Visit off-price retailers often. They regularly replenish their stock of mainly casual shoes.

Step
5

Spend a day at the outlet mall in your area. Look to brand name depots for radically reduced prices on last season and last year's hot overruns.

Tips & Warnings

Examine secondhand shoes very carefully for scuff marks, worn heels and a secure attachment of the upper to the sole.

Check newspapers and flyers for store coupons offering additional discounts during sale periods.

Pull the items that sit in your own closet and consider selling them to a vintage or secondhand store. You may receive better compensation in store credit than in cash back.

Discounted, off-price and sale items are often nonrefundable. Confirm the terms of sale before you purchase.
